Resort, local island or split stay with kids?
For most families, a split stay works best: a few nights on a local island, then a resort beach villa to finish. Here is how the options compare.
Option | Why families like it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
Resort | Kids’ clubs, pools, family beach villas, all meals on site | The highest nightly cost; overwater villas are often unsuitable for toddlers and young swimmers |
Local island guesthouse | Real village life, friendly locals, playgrounds and football on the beach, and a much lower nightly rate | No alcohol, modest dress in the village, swimwear on designated beaches, fewer facilities |
Split stay | Culture and value first, then a resort treat the kids will remember | One extra transfer, which we plan around nap times and meals |
One tip from experience: choose a beach villa rather than an overwater villa with young children. You step straight from the door onto sand and shallow water, with no deck edge to worry about. If you are torn between resorts, our Choosing Your Maldives Island post compares four very different ones, including a family favourite.
What kids can do in the Maldives
There are no theme parks, and that is the point. Days revolve around the water, with plenty of time to just be a kid on the beach.
- Lagoon snorkelling: calm, shallow water where even young children can see fish, starfish and baby reef sharks from the shore
- Sandbank picnics: a boat ride to a strip of white sand in the middle of the ocean, with nothing to do but splash and build castles
- Dolphin cruises: an easy boat trip at sunset that toddlers to teens love
- Kayaking and watersports: for older kids, with life jackets and guides
- Village life: fishing boats coming in, kids playing football, fresh coconuts and local snacks
- Big marine life: seasonal manta ray and whale shark trips for confident swimmers
- Learning to snorkel or dive: beginner snorkel lessons, and diving for older children through registered dive centres
We match excursions to your children’s ages and swimming confidence, and every boat trip runs subject to weather.

The best family windows are the Australian summer and Easter holidays, both in the Maldives dry season with calm seas. The catch is peak prices, so book early.
- Summer holidays (Dec–Jan): calmest seas, highest prices; Christmas and New Year sell out months ahead
- Easter (late Mar–mid Apr 2027): still dry, slightly cheaper than summer, and ideal for a family split stay
- Winter holidays (late Jun–mid Jul): the wet season, with the best-value prices and short tropical showers

Practical tips for Australian families
Flights. Most families fly one-stop via Singapore, about 12 to 14 hours in total. An overnight flight lets little ones sleep, and some families break the trip with a night in Singapore.
Transfers. Islands are reached by speedboat or seaplane from Malé. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a late arrival may mean a night near the airport. We time speedboat transfers around your flights and keep them short where we can.
Entry. Every child needs their own passport and their own free IMUGA Traveller Declaration, completed within 96 hours before you land.
Sun and water. The equatorial sun is strong year round. Pack rash vests, hats and reef-safe sunscreen, and keep a close eye on children near the water, as most beaches have no lifeguards.
Food. Guesthouses serve fresh fish, rice, curries and fruit, and are happy to cook something mild for fussy eaters. Resorts have kids’ menus. All food on local islands is halal.
Health and insurance. Local islands have small health centres, with larger hospitals in Malé. Check Smartraveller before you go and take travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
What does a Maldives family holiday cost?
Our Lagoon Days family package starts from A$9,995 for a family of four (two adults and two children aged 2 to 11), excluding international flights. That works out to about A$2,500 per person for 7 days and 6 nights.
It includes:
- Four nights in family accommodation on a local island, with daily breakfast and dinner
- Two nights in a family beach villa at a private island resort, with all-inclusive meals
- A guided reef snorkelling trip and a sandbank visit, suited to your children’s ages
- All airport and inter-island transfers
- Accommodation taxes, and local support on the ground
What changes the price:
- Children’s ages: children 12 and over, and other family sizes, are quoted individually
- Babies: children under 2 don’t pay the Maldives green tax
- Season: summer and Easter cost more than the June–July winter break
- Room choice: connecting rooms, villa upgrades and extra resort nights
